Fuel Usage

Watch an image of an athlete in motion, and it is easy to see how dynamic the human body is. Each intricate movement is driven by billions of microscopic units, each with its unique function, fueled by a molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The human body carries enough ATP within the muscles (~100 g) to support 1 to 4 seconds of intense activity before needing to tap into its triple-line system of energy production to fuel sport performance (see table 2.1). All lines of the energy system work together, yet the intensity of sport activity dictates the proportion of energy supplied by each (see figure 2.1).

Fluid Needs of Youth Athletes
Consuming adequate amounts of fluids throughout the day and during exercise is important for a young athlete’s health and overall performance.
– – –
Signs and symptoms that a youth athlete may be suffering from dehydration include acute weight loss, headache and lightheadedness, noticeable thirst, irritability, nausea, muscle cramping, dark yellow urine, difficulty paying attention, weakness, and fatigue.
To help maintain optimal hydration, young athletes should meet daily fluid guidelines shown in table 4.2. Additionally, youth athletes should aim to consume 6 mL/lb (13.2 mL/ kg) of body weight for each hour of exercise. For a 60 lb (27 kg) athlete, this would equate to 360 mL (0.35 L)/hour or 90 mL (0.09 L) every 15 minutes; for a 100 lb (45 kg) athlete, the comparable amount would be 600 mL (0.59 L)/hour or 150 mL/oz (0.15 L) every 15 minutes. These guidelines are likely to increase when intensity of exertion is high and the young athlete is competing in heat.

Supplement Options for Plant-Based Athletes
Although dietary supplements should never serve as a crutch to a poorly planned diet, there are several nutrients found primarily in animal-based foods that are often lacking in the diets of plant-based athletes; as a result, supplementation may be warranted to
avoid deficiency and consequent declines in performance. As discussed earlier, protein, zinc, iron, calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12 are among these nutrients (see table 4.12).

Before using any dietary supplements, however, athletes who have concerns regarding nutritional status and supplemental ingredients of potential benefit to health and performance are encouraged to consult with a doctor as well as a registered dietitian,
preferably one who is a board-certified specialist in sport dietetics or has exercise physiology education.
